Dyslexia Symptoms

Dyslexia is a term that is heard frequently but seldom used in a school setting.  It is based on a neurological
aspect of the brain.  Often, the term “Specific Learning Disability” is used in place of “Dyslexia”.  No matter
how it is used, both terms refer to a problem related to language.  It is related to how the student learns in the
brain and not to the intelligence of the person.  Many of us are aware of very intelligent people who have this
condition.

Dyslexia is a life-long condition that can be very mild to very severe.  With proper intervention, the dyslexic
student can be helped.  One can detect dyslexic tendencies when difficulties arise in the areas of reading, oral
and/or visual, or writing (including spelling).

Reading difficulties can range from identifying letter names or sounds to slow, inaccurate or poor reading
comprehension.

Common characteristics with oral language challenges may include losing attention quickly.  The student’s inability
to cope with language hears “jibberish” and, thus, the attention is lost.  This can be misinterpreted as an attention
deficit disorder.  Along with attention there may be a weak auditory memory.  Attention and memory are two
different areas; however attention is needed to have memory.  Many times these students struggle in expressing
language fluently or understanding explanations and even jokes.

Some visual problems also occur under this condition.  The most common visual comprehension difficulty is unable
to find a relevant main idea.  The student may have difficulty imaging what is heard or/and written.  While
writing, the student may give too much detail where it is obvious they do not know when it is enough.

Finally, characteristics while processing language can be laborious to the person with dyslexia.  Often the student
is unable to self-correct him/herself, summarize a passage, or interpret what is read or heard in his or her
own words.
